This is a list of recent changes made to Synchronize! Pro:
Version 4.2.4 January 30, 2001
• Added compatibility with older sync setup documents and a checkbox in the "Comparing files" option which allows disks to be found by name only.
Version 4.2.3 January 21, 2001
• Added an online purchase option.
• Improved the way Synchronize! Pro deals with disks with identical names, so that they are always correctly distinguished.
• Improved the way Synchronize! Pro decides whether to automatically open folders for the "Files to Copy" dialog.
• Fixed a problem which causes a dialog to disappear immediately. This dialog says that the system is not OK for SpeedShare.
• Fixed a problem with the way the progress dialog was being put away in the case of an error.
• Fixed a problem which sometimes caused folders set by "Don't copy folders" to not be ignored as they should be.
• Fixed a problem which could cause Synchronize! Pro to claim that a folder is not allowed to be within the same folder, for folders being synced using a SpeedShare Server connection.
• Fixed a problem which caused the "Sync deleted files" in the Options menu to be disabled when it shouldn't be. This could happen when changing the direction arrow by clicking on it.
• Excluded the invisible folder named "Network Trash Folder" from all syncs. It shouldn't be copied, and it causes confusion when it can't be deleted.
Version 4.2.2 June 19, 2000
• Added an option to "Comparing Files" for copying files whose file creator or type is different, but the modification date is the same.
• Added the last date and time a sync was performed in the setup window.
• Fixed the Pause button not being active when a sync is started.
• Updated the Copy Engine to fix a problem which sometimes caused a file transfer to hang when copying files over the Internet (via TCP/IP) using SpeedShare on Mac OS 9.

Version 4.2 April 14, 2000
• Added Internet to the Options menu. This option connects and disconnects to the Internet using PPP over a modem.
• Added a "Start sync" check box to the Completion Options, so that a sync can be chained without having to check the "Start sync when document is opened" box in the sync to be started.
• Added copying of folder comments.
• Fixed a problem which occurred with some UNIX implementations of AppleShare-like file servers. The problem used to cause a -50 file system error; this no longer happens.
• Fixed some problems with the Balloon Help for the Options menu.
• Fixed a problem which caused the serial number to not be remembered on some Macs.
Version 4.1 October 22, 1999
• Added "Comparing files..." option so that time zone and Daylight Savings Time changes can be accomodated without having to re-copy all files. This option also supports backing up source code files managed by the 'ckid' resource. These files are typically managed by Projector or VOODOO.
• Added a new method of finding disks, so that volumes with the same name can always be correctly identified. This method stamps each disk with a unique ID. To use this new method, re-choose the folders for a backup.
• Added a zoom box to the Files To Copy window.
• Added automatic exclusion of Norton Utilities files which, when overwritten by a backup, would cause a crash.
• Speeded up unmounting of server volumes.
• Fixed a problem which caused the Stop button to be inactive after an error occurred.
• Fixed a problem which could cause an error when an attempt was made to delete certain files which did not exist. This occurred when some files were excluded from a sync.
• Fixed a problem which caused an error message that there was not enough memory available when in fact, there was.
• Fixed a problem which caused the Speech control panel to speak when the "Scanning Folders" window is in front.
Version 4.0 May 31, 1999
• Synchronize! Pro now works with SpeedShare to synchronize and backup files over the Internet.
• Preferences was revamped, and new features which support multiple log files and emailing a log file using an AppleScript were added. Use the Edit menu to choose Preferences, then use the popup menu to choose "Log Files".
Version 3.7 April 20, 1999
• Synchronize! Pro now copies comments! Enable this feature with "Copy comments" in the Options menu.
• Files or folders on multiple disks can be included in a synchronization. Use "Resolve aliases" in the Options menu to do this.
• Fixed a problem which caused a crash when displaying some edit and name conflicts.
• Fixed a problem which caused email addresses with a dot prior to the @ sign (as in john.doe@xxx.com) to be considered invalid.
Version 3.6.4 October 5, 1998
• Due to popular demand, the feature which uses Apple Events to copy folder views was removed. It was too slow.
Version 3.6.3 October 4, 1998
• Added an item to the Help menu in Mac OS 8 which allows the help to be hidden when the application is opened.
• Folder views are now copied in Mac OS 8 using the Finder via Apple Events.
This is slower, but more accurate, and the new Finder folder view information is now copied.
• Added an item to Error Preferences so that a sync with a disk which isn't found can be
cancelled after a period of time.
• Added the ability to copy the locked state of all files.
• Fixed a problem in which certain Japanese file names were not logged correctly.
• Fixed a problem which caused a crash when a certain kind of edit conflict occurred.
• Fixed a problem at startup which caused AutoSync to start certain syncs when they were
set to start "when disks are available".
Version 3.6.2 March 17, 1998
• Fixed a problem which caused logged file names to be incorrect.
• Fixed a problem with updating the MOVE text in the sync setup window.
• Fixed a problem which affected how files on the Desktop were copied. The problem was introduced in version 3.6.1, when changes to accomodate the Mac OS 8 Finder were made.
Version 3.6.1 March 11, 1998
• Fixed several problems related to MacOS 8, including one which caused the Finder to claim that a disk can't be found.
• Fixed a problem which could cause a disk to be incorrectly found to be missing, or clicking the Sync button seemed to have no effect.

• Made adjustments for international localization. This is the first version of Synchronize! Pro available in French.
• Consolidated the Help into a single menu for Mac OS 8.
• Fixed a problem which caused a crash when copying large portions of the Log.
Version 3.5.6 October 14, 1997
• Fixed a problem which prevented syncs from starting automatically if both disks were not available. This problem can be fixed by replacing AutoSync in your Startup Items folder with AutoSync 1.4.1.
To install the new version of AutoSync:
1. Open Synchronize! Pro.
2. Use the File menu to choose New.
3. Use the Options menu to choose Startup Options.
4. Hold down the Option key and click OK.
5. There will be a dialog box asking whether you want the new version of AutoSync installed. Click Yes.

• Fixed a problem which prevented locked files from being copied if "Skip open files" is active.
• Fixed a problem which sometimes caused the locked status of a file to not be copied correctly.
• Fixed a problem which caused a hang while choosing a folder to be synced, if an alias, rather than a folder, is chosen.
• Added a time window during which periodically scheduled syncs won't run, so that a backup can be scheduled. See the "Don't Start" button in the Start Options.
• With MacOS 8, the Finder is used to unmount a shared disk.
• When using Auto-Connect, AppleShare greeting dialogs will no longer be displayed.
• Added explanations of edit and name conflicts to the Files To Copy dialog .
• Up and down arrow keys are now supported in the Files To Copy dialog.
Version 3.5.2 March 7, 1997
• Fixed a bug in AutoSync which prevented automatic syncs of unmounted file server disks.
To install the new version of AutoSync:
1. Use the File menu to choose New.
2. Use the Options menu to choose Startup Options.
3. Hold down the Option key and click OK.
4. There will be a dialog box asking whether you want the new version of AutoSync installed. Click Yes.
• Removed the beachball displayed in the folder scanning progress window in the background. It was distracting to some people.
Version 3.5.1 January 5, 1997
• Added color icons and a description of Speedster, the fast file-copying companion to Synchronize! Pro, which enables Synchronize! Pro to copy files over the Internet.
• Fixed a bug which sometimes caused erronous display of the total size of files to be copied.

• When files are moved, the emptied folders can now be optionally deleted.
• Preferences was modified so that two radio buttons, "Skip open files" and "Copy open files" replace the single "Copy open files" check box. When "Skip open files" is active, files which are open are skipped without an error message. Skipped files are noted in the Log, however.
• Fixed a problem with "Sync deleted files". Files were sometimes not being deleted.
• Fixed a problem with Resolve Aliases which can cause a confusing error dialog.
• Fixed a problem that sometimes caused a crash after all folders were scanned.
• Extended support of large disks to 2000 GB, given that they are supported in the OS.

• Fixed a problem with "Copy only folders..." - subfolders weren't being copied!

Version 3.4.0 May 16, 1996
• Fixed a crash which occurred when "Copy only folders..." is chosen from the Options menu, and the Add button is clicked. This problem occurs only on Power Macs with some versions of System 7.5.2 and all versions of System 7.5.3.
• Added the ability to copy or not copy certain folders by name, label, and whether they are invisible.
• Improved folder scanning for better performance. With the new approach, setting the whole hard disk to be scanned and then choosing only certain folders to be synchronized will scan only those folders which are needed, significantly reducing the scanning time for the disk.
• Disks are now qualified by whether the disk is connected remotely over a network. This allows a local hard disk or floppy disk to have the same name as a file server disk, without confusion. We don't recommend having more than one disk with the same name, though. It can still create confusion!
• No more than one outstanding synchronization is now allowed to exist for one sync setup. This prevents an automatically-started sync from being started many times, and possibly all of them never finishing.
• Changed the server synchronization time check to prevent collisions from multiple Macs trying to synchronize to a file server at the same time.
• Changed the creation of Synchronize! Temp files so that they are created with the type of the final file, so that UNIX systems which do carriage return/line feed conversions for TEXT files work properly.
Version 3.3.2 December 9, 1995
• Fixed a crash which can occur when a sync is cancelled, or a disk is not available.
• Fixed a bug which sometimes caused sync start times to not be saved in the Preferences file.
• Added Retry at Startup behavior. When your Mac is restarted, a synchronization that was missed will be automatically started.
• Fixed a bug which sometimes caused a crash when a disk was not available.
• Fixed a bug which limited the number of files in a sync to less than 32,768. The limit is now over 2 billion!
• Fixed a misplaced button in the folder selection dialog when DialogView is used.
Version 3.3.1 October 1, 1995
• Fixed a problem on Power Macs which causes only the current alert sound to be played as the completion sound.
• Fixed a problem which caused a crash at startup on Macs running System 6.
Version 3.3 September 18, 1995
• With this version, Synchronize! Pro is now "accelerated" (native) for the Power Mac! Synchronize! Pro is normally distributed as a FAT program, so that it will run on either the 68K or Power Macs.
• Added the ability to run Sync! Pro on directly on a file server, and copy user and group privileges to and from the server.
• Added more flexibility to syncing AppleShare privileges. For more information, use the Start Options menu to choose "Sync AppleShare privileges...".
• Fixed a bug which sometimes caused a "Group Index out of range" error.
• Start Options allows timed synchronizations to be started only on certain days.
• Deleted folders (as well as deleted files) are deleted in the corresponding folder, if "Sync deleted files" is enabled in the Options menu.
• A problem which sometimes caused "Start synchronization at startup" in Start Options to not work was fixed.
• AutoSync (it's now version 1.2.0) allows newly created syncs to be run at a preset time. The new version is installed when "Start Options" is chosen from the Options menu.
• The Completion Option "Open a file..." is always executed, even when there aren't any files to copy.
• Locked files are now copied without errors.
• Fixed an oversight in which checking a label for files to be copied didn't check the main box.
• When a folder is removed from a list of folders to be included or excluded, the user will be asked if the change should be saved.
Version 3.2.9 April 25, 1995
• The completion sound is now played, even if there are no files to be copied.
• AutoSync (version 1.1) now ignores all sync documents which can't be found. It is installed when "Start Options" is chosen from the Options menu.
• Fixed a problem in which AppleScripts which told Synchronize! to sync several documents didn't necessarily open all documents. This was because Synchronize! was ignoring Apple Events in dialogs. It now sees them at all times.
• Fixed a problem in which the Completion Option "Open a file" information was lost if "OK" was chosen without explicitly choosing the file.
• Fixed a bug which caused items other than files or folders which were dragged from the Finder and dropped into a Synchronize! document window to crash Synchronize!.
• Fixed a bug which caused an internal error for backups or synchronizations of more than 4,000 files.
• Fixed a problem in which the wrong error message was given when memory was low.
• Fixed the problem where the rotating ball didn't go away when Synchronize! was put into the background, then brought to the foreground while scanning folders.
Version 3.2.8 March 2, 1995
• Fixed a bug which sometimes affected memory and memory allocation, particularly when the number of lines in the Log approached the limit set in Log Preferences.
• When using the Resolve Aliases option, aliases in the top-level folder only can be resolved, ignoring or copying the aliases without resolving them at lower folder levels.
• Added encryption of credit card information for registration by email, so that no one has unauthorized access to your credit card number.
• Added a feature to Completion Options which opens a file or alias (or an AppleScript which has been saved as an application) when a synchronization is complete. With this feature, synchronizations can be chained, or special functions can be launched when a synchronization is complete.
• Date and time is now presented in the format set in the "Date & Time" Control Panel.
• When "Log copied files" is checked in Log Preferences, deleted files and folders are also logged.
• The Application Menu is now available when an error has occurred, to allow switching to another application, such as the Finder, with the menu. Application switching was always available by clicking on another application's windows.
• Changed "Shut down when complete" so that the Finder is asked to shut down under System 7. This causes the Finder to properly quit all open applications in turn.
• Fixed a problem which caused the wrong files to be selected when using the "Resolve Aliases" and "AutoDoubler" options together.
• Fixed a problem which could sometimes cause an automatic synchronization to be missed.
Version 3.2.6 October 27, 1994
• Fixed "Don't copy files which end with" so that it works.
• Fixed a bug which sometimes caused a system crash after choosing "Save As..."
• Fixed a problem which caused a system crash when setting the Log to keep more than 8000 lines.
• Changed the Log so that when the limit on the number of lines is reached, no more than 10% of the existing lines will be removed at one time.
• Fixed a bug which caused an error in deleting a folder to keep retrying that operation forever, even though "Skip" was chosen in the Error Preferences.
